I love this place. Everytime I come back to IA, I always keep visiting this precious bookstore. I see the history of it moved from the street corner to the place where it is now. And see the cats grow old, but the peaceful circumstances always remain the same. Feel like it will still be there when I grow old.

The Haunted Bookshop is one of those quietly magical spots every book lover should visit. Floor to ceiling, it’s packed with used and vintage books. You can easily lose an hour here without even trying. Every shelf has a story — history, poetry, art, classics, and random gems you didn’t know you needed. The cats are the real stars. They stroll around like they own the place, and honestly, they kind of do. Sometimes they nap by the window, sometimes they watch you like they’re the real book critics. Masks are still required, and if you forget one, they’ll give you one for free. That small gesture says a lot about how much they care. The science and nonfiction shelves could use a little update, but that’s minor. If you love books and end up in Iowa City, this place is non-negotiable. Go. Browse. Pet the cats. Leave happier.

This is a charming building with little nooks, creaking floors and of course a shop cat. So many used books that have been loved and cared for. A warning, they do make you wear masks so if this is a problem for you you may want to bypass this shop.

The owner was very nice and gave me a book recommendation I’m looking forward to checking out, there are so many great books here, and there are two friendly adorable cats—what more could you possibly want out of any place?

Endlessly thankful to have these folks and their shop as part of the Iowa City community. It's a lovely place to visit and browse. I'm not sure I've ever visited with a specific purchase in mind, but browsing has always yielded something perfect to buy. I also value this business as a person who continues to protect my health by masking in public spaces. I appreciate seeing their attention and commitment to indoor air quality and public health on display.
