The Writer's Block Bookstore (Plant St.)

Everything a small bookshop should be. This sweet bookseller offers a wide variety of new books and unique gifts. Books range from new offerings to off the wall occult to children's to The Classics. There's even a special section of banned books with note cards explaining when & why the books were banned. The store associates were helpful and friendly. Perfect little literary oasis.

In my experience and opinion, they treat local authors horribly. Dropped off two books to see if they would consider carrying them. The person who I spoke with on the phone was rude, interruptive and nasty. I went back to the store to find that they had thrown my books in the trash. Then, I took the books to the Winter Park store after getting a call from the store. Drove an hour there, where they were supposed to get ahold of me about the books. No call, no email, no nothing. So much for caring about using local authors. Absurd.

A breath of fresh air! It was fun to see the "banned books" section. They included the dates that the books were banned, so not ALL of them are banned here or even currently banned, but still fun to see WHY they were banned and when. The kids' section is really cool - they have a lot of books, some toys, and a little table to read/play at. The lady at the desk was helpful and kind. She helped me find the book I wanted (Screwtape letters) and had a nice discussion with me about it. Lots of options here. They don't have almost any books in Spanish, but most bookstores don't. Definitely worth walking through if you're downtown. Support your local store! It's worth the extra dollar or two.

I cannot express my gratitude. Cassidy and Jackie rock! They were so gracious and allowed me to host my bookworm daughter's birthday party at the store after hours. It was AMAZING! The party was a hit, and everyone bought her books right then and there. We had a blast! THANK YOU!!!! Highly recommend!!!!
