Ujamaa Community Bookstore is a Black-owned bookstore located in the historic Near Northwest Neighborhood of Indianapolis. Our store privileges the voices of Black authors, stories, and history, and our books showcase our commitment to liberation and social justice. We also carry children's books, graphic novels, and genre-specific books, primarily written by Black authors. We opened our store on Juneteenth, 2021, after the neighborhood lost their local library branch. Our space doubles as a retail store and community space, so your online purchase helps us fund the educational programming and resources we offer to the community for free every day. "Ujamaa" means "cooperative economics," which highlights our commitment to supporting local Black business owners by carrying their products in our physical store.

A fantastic bookstore focused on Black authors and Black stories. The selection is incredible. Whatever you are looking for in your next read, Ujamaa has it. Ujamaa cares about the community in a way that many places in Indianapolis don’t. During the weekend I visited they not only had a mutual aid drop off, but they also had a Know Your Rights Event! It’s great to see a bookstore understand what the community wants and what the community needs and deliver on both. I highly, highly recommend.

I am so thankful because I was able to attend the grief and depression event that was held there I got to see the transformation of the old library as well as I got to get some cool and unique things.

Truly the best Black-owned bookstore in Indianapolis. It's amazing, every employee is helpful and kind, and great activities for families and kids. Gaming computers that are crazy fast so you can work or play in the store FREE of charge!!! Great place for meeting and having discussions, a great place for hosting events. I literally buy all my gifts from this store cause they sell more than just books. I could go on for days about how amazing this place really is.

A gem of a third space. Alecia is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and supportive of community efforts. Space features local writers and their work and group activities. Love getting book recommendations from Amethyst and talking music with Terrel.

The staff here made our experience so comforting. It was my friend and I'd first time visiting and it felt like we were talking to friends. I loved speaking to Korie Griggs, a local author, and getting to peacefully browse the shops selection. I will absolutely be returning to visit the lovely people working, and stock up on some more much needed education!
