I stopped by Ersula’s History Shop yesterday. This is an amazing shop that focuses on Black History, with a specialization in Tampa’s Black History. The shop may be small, but you can feel it bursting with information. It is a charming store filled with books, displays, art and vintage items. Some are for purchase and some for reference. The owner, Ersula Odom, was a gracious host and a pleasure to talk to. I think we pushed an 1.5 hr+ conversation, with the bulk of it pertaining to everything other than why I initially stopped in. If you have a question, she can answer or at least be able to tell you how to find it. She offers a wide range of services that include tours, presentations, book publishing and designing history-centric wall displays.

Ersula’s history shop is a hidden gem. Ersula is incredibly knowledgeable—if it’s related to history, she knows it. Her shop is full of books that can help guide your research, and she’s always willing to offer insight or help you think through your ideas. What makes the shop extra special is how connected Ersula is to the neighborhood. She’s deeply in tune with what’s happening in the community and genuinely loves what she does. Every visit turns into a meaningful conversation. I always leave feeling inspired and more curious.

One of the first places I visited when I arrived in Tampa was Ersula’s History Shop, and it immediately felt like home. As someone who deeply loves and honors Black history, stepping into this space was like walking through a living archive of our people’s brilliance, resilience, and legacy. She curates every item, from vintage magazines to rare collectibles, and creates a powerful experience that both educates and inspires. It's more than a shop; it's a sanctuary of our stories. I would recommend Ersula's History Shop for everyone visiting Tampa and living in Tampa.
