The Haunted Book Shop is named after the beloved former bookstore located in downtown Mobile, operating from 1941 to 1991 when it closed its doors. That bookstore was founded by Adelaide Marston (later Adelaide Trigg) and Cameron Plummer and named for their favorite book, The Haunted Book Shop, by Christopher Morley.

This is probably going to be my go-to bookstore. The staff was PHENOMENAL and I have never been here before. Right when I walked it, I felt welcomed. They showed me all the sections of the store and I love that they just let you be while you shop in peace. They also specialize in local authors as well. I definitely want to start shopping here to support a local business.

This place is a gem! Such a cute local store. The staff left handwritten notes to highlight books they've read and liked - it felt so personalized like someone was guiding me through the options. Loved it. A must-see downtown

if i could give 3.5 stars i would, that'd be more accurate. the staff are very nice and attentive, the selection of books is great and Mr. Bingly is ADORABLE. i love that they have signs up in certain areas to let people know that if Mr. Bingly is sitting there to leave him be as he's overstimulated. we bought 2 books. a newer edition of charles darwins work and the body of god, pictured. i will say i understand that everything is quite expensive in this economy & i don't blame local stores for having pricey items. what i will blame them for is when the price is absolutely stinking absurd for the type/quality of item. some of the books they had were up charged by $5+. the body of god was priced at $50, it seems like a 1st/2nd edition from 1970 and is a beautiful book but i definitely don't agree with that price for it. it has less than 60 pages and is in iiffy condition. other books similar in age/content/quality were above $50. and the astrology stamp set (we did NOT buy) is actually disgustingly expensive. there is no way i'd ever pay, or recommend paying $45 for a stamp set this specific/small. all in all, i'd visit again but i'll be weary of what i buy. some items are simply not worth the prices.

Great independent bookstore. It is so clean and organized. I was there for order pickup and the customer service person made it so easy. They were so friendly. The whole environment has a laid back friendliness to it. They had an eclectic selection of items across all category. I really like how they support local authors and books related to Mobile, AL and the south. As well as having new and used items in all caregoried including graphic novels, horror, science fiction, romance and children's books. Their pricing on my item was so much cheaper than other places . I think it's incredible that they took a chance on a kickstart buy and had it for a very fair price. I highly recommend anyone who has not checked this place to go there. Its important to support local independent bookstores. I would give more than 5 stars if I could.
