BookPeople in Austin is a must-visit if you love bookstores with personality, great people, and lots of little extras. It is Texas’s largest and most beloved independent bookstore, and it absolutely delivers on staff, selection, and quirky atmosphere. Why it’s a must-see - Two-story, independently owned bookstore with a huge, well-curated selection of fiction, nonfiction, children’s, YA, and local “Texana” titles. - Known for friendly, well-read staff who happily recommend books and go check the shelves for you if you call or ask in person. - Strong sense of Austin culture: often described as warm, nostalgic, and a little weird in the very best way. Gifts, cards, and quirky finds - Big range of cards, notebooks, puzzles, toys, socks, and other “trinkets and treasures,” so you can easily grab gifts along with your books. - Fun Austin and Texas-themed items plus exclusive BookPeople merch (totes, shirts, mugs) if you want a souvenir. - Creative in-store displays like “blind date with a book” and staff recommendation cards that make browsing feel like a scavenger hunt. - Lively but cozy atmosphere that makes many visitors say they could spend hours or even a whole day there. - On-site CoffeePeople café with coffee, tea, snacks, and some vegan/gluten-free options so you can linger with your haul. - Centrally located at 603 N. Lamar Blvd, right in the heart of Austin, and often mentioned as a can’t-miss stop for book lovers visiting the city. If you are making any kind of bookish tour of Texas, BookPeople should definitely be on the list.

I love this bookshop! It's both cozy and large with a great selection and so many little odds and ends. You can find local romance author Ali Hazelwood’s signed section, browse all the fun gift-y chotchkes, and flip through some travel books — including one with a great little excerpt about Austin.

I traveled across the country and am fortunate to step inside BookPeople in Austin, and it was worth every mile. This three level wonderland of books has something for everyone, including author signings, lectures, and every bookish experience you can imagine. Beyond the shelves, they have T‑shirts, sweatshirts, and quirky merch that makes browsing even more fun. What makes it truly special is its support for indie authors. I discovered countless writers I had never seen in chain bookstores. When you need a break, the in-store café, CoffeePeople, serves coffee, tea, breakfast tacos, sandwiches, pastries, and desserts, including vegan and gluten-free options, so you can sip and snack while you read. It is no wonder this famous store has become a must-visit destination for book lovers. **Address: 603 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78703 Directions: From downtown Austin, head north on Congress Ave toward E 7th St. Turn left onto W 6th St, then right onto N Lamar Blvd. BookPeople will be on your left. Parking is available nearby, including metered street spots and public garages.

Came here with my boyfriend to buy a book and instantly fell in love with this bookstore! There’s a cozy café inside, and the staff were super helpful when I was looking for a specific book. They sometimes host signing events (I haven’t attended one yet), and there’s also a book club I’m planning to join. Definitely coming back next time!

The largest indie bookstore in Texas with Super knowledgeable and helpful staff. Plenty of nooks to preview selections before buying them. Nice staff recommendations on the book shelves. There's a café and a banned book area. Large kid's section. Check the www for events which happen on the regular. A must stop while in Austin.
