New Dominion Bookshop

Today was my first trip into the New Dominion Bookstore and will most definitely be my last. I called 15 minutes ahead of time to check and make sure the bookstore was dog friendly. The person who answered the phone let me know that dogs are welcome and they would see me soon. When we arrived, my friend also had her two dogs in tow. There were four people and three dogs total. We looked through the books and as we were leaving a group of six people came in and began petting the dogs. They got a bit rowdy while we were right near the exit. The British employee comes up to me and says we need to leave now and we’re causing issues. I told him we’re leaving and he kept talking and insisting we leave because we’re causing a disturbance. His tone and language were incredibly rude and he was blocking and trying to corral me with his arms. After we got outside, I gave my dog to my husband and went back inside. I told the employee that his behavior was incredibly rude and we were already leaving. He said, “well most people ask before they bring dogs in.” I informed him that I had called and spoken to another employee who told me dogs were welcome. He said, “where did you call?” Questioning me as if he didn’t believe me. He eventually apologized but reiterated we had five dogs and we were disturbing other patrons. I reminded him we had three dogs and we didn’t mind leaving the establishment. I let him know none of us would be returning. The issue wasn’t being asked to leave. It was the disrespectful and aggressive manner in which it was done. When I was back outside, patrons who observed what happened approached us and said it was really strange and that our dogs did nothing wrong. I respect any establishment’s request to leave especially when dogs are involved, but it was obvious by the employee’s behavior, he was mad as soon as we walked through the door. TLDR - this store is not actually dog friendly or people friendly, for that matter.

I love New Dominion for the atmosphere and gift buying for my nieces. They have a great selection, and if they don’t have it on the shelf, they’ll place an order for you. Also the location on the Downtown Mall is unbeatable for the vibes and walkability 🍂

I've been to a lot of bookstores and this one is my favorite! It is almost as if the store was curated for me and my wife. We could have spent all day in there and the next time we are in Charlottesville we will! I walked in and instantly noticed this book calling to me on the shelf. There were many others I would have liked to purchase as well! A fantastic store and we can't wait to come back!
