At The Little Book, our mission is to create meaningful connection in the Des Moines Community through the creation of a child-inclusive space focusing on literacy, community wellness, and inclusion. Centering the voices of Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, as well as the LGBTQ2S+ communities is and will always be of top priority. We believe that children deserve knowledge, truth, and access to books - and both as booksellers and caretakers, we stand against book banning in all of its forms. The creations of local makers, artists, and authors are much of what fill our shelves. We aim to add tangible value to the Highland Park/Oak Park communities. Co-owners Bethany and David Fast hope that when you step through their doors, you feel the love, thoughtfulness, and care that was poured into every detail of the store, and that when you leave, you look foward to your next visit. Little Minds, Little Joys, The Little Book. Thank you for being here with us. *We acknowledge that our store is located within the ancestral, traditional and unceded territory of the Bxoje Mya (Ioway), oaakiiwakihinaki (Sauk) & Mekwahkiaahina (Fox), & Ohthi akwi Nations.

Love this bookstore. Big variety of both kids, teens, and adult book. Plus there’s a dedicated kid area to keep little ones entertained while you shop.

The Little Book is a treasure in the Oak Park/ Highland Park neighborhood. We met for an event at rental space they have available called The Bank. The book store is cozy and adult & kid-friendly and The Bank is good-sized and bright with a wall of windows. Staff is friendly & hospitable. We highly recommend!

Such a cute book store. I love taking my son here. They have a great selection and I am so happy they have more adult options! They recently rearranged the kids’ and adults’ sections, and it looks adorable. The new layout makes so much more sense and feels more open and welcoming. It’s clear a lot of thought went into creating a space that feels intentional and inviting for everyone. The book selection is fantastic — thoughtfully curated with something for every kind of reader. And I’m obsessed with all the different seating options. Whether you want to curl up in a corner, settle into a comfy chair, or wander while you browse, it’s just the perfect place to slow down and enjoy being surrounded by stories.

Super fun & cute children’s book store! Plenty of space for kids to run around and hang out. And a lot of the stationery is local!! The owners really made sure to emphasis the importance of community when putting this all together. The mural, the woodwork, the design, products, so much of it came from right here in Des Moines or Iowa. There is also a clear focus on highlighting other cultures and marginalized groups. Currently, there’s a display for Ramadan and Women’s History Month. It’s a great place for anyone to come in and hang out and indulge in books!!! (and all the other fun toys and stationery)

Stopped by during Independent Bookstore Day and was delighted with the store merch and how the store itself is laid out. It is predominantly children's books but there is a curated selection of books for grown ups too. So much thought and care was put into this space from kid sized activity tables to a reading fort to step stools in the restrooms.
