McClelland Book room, a book store within a store, and an important piece of what makes The Mountaineer a destination location. The Mountaineer in Keene Valley is hands-down one of the best outdoor gear shops I’ve ever visited. The selection of climbing and mountaineering equipment is incredible—everything you could possibly need, all top quality. But what really stood out was the staff. Everyone was so friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about climbing and the outdoors. They took the time to share personal recommendations and gave me great advice on local routes and gear choices. You can tell they truly care about helping people get the most out of their adventures. If you’re heading into the Adirondacks or just love great gear and expert service, this place is a must-visit.

I'm a long time customer (25+ years) and I just-keep-coming-back, despite living over 400+ miles away! (seriously). The selection is outstanding, the staff are excellent, the store is truly authentic. This is hands-down my all time favorite outdoor store. I recently purchased my back country skis, boots and bindings from the Mountaineer. The staff took extra care to make sure the boots were an excellent fit. This place is the real-deal. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Keep up the great job. You guys are amazing. From simple patches, to books, to clothing, to Everest expedition gear, they got it all. Whenever I visit, I see everyone from young families to serious ice climbers getting ready for their next adventure. The staff have excellent local knowledge of conditions because they are out themselves everyday living/hiking/skiing/camping in the ADKs. You're in the best hands, no question. Upstairs is a discount area and they also have a used gear store open on the weekends, a block away.

A great outdoor store with lots of different gear you may need in the wilderness. They even have a little discounted area on the second level. Find a guide here or get some expert advice!

Always have to stop here when passing through Keene. It’s become a bit of a tradition. Most times I’d roll by after hours on my way to or from hiking the High Peaks, but today I made the trip on the motorcycle with this stop specifically in mind. Picked up a few things to help extend my motorcycle camping season into the fall and winter. Great shop for anyone who loves hiking, climbing, or skiing.

This store was highly recommended by my boss and this store was my favorite in the ADKs! The store has a really cool section of all types of adventure/outdoors books from maps to journals to books about rock climbers. I bought myself an AT map that I framed. The store has everything you need to get out there and hike. They have a bunch of snacks, hats, clothing, backpacks, boots, head lamps. EVERYTHING. Its a really cute store and it just made me so happy walking inside through it. I even had to stop again to the store on our way back home so I can buy a balsam for pillow. Highly recommend to stop here!
